Triggers

Before:

Triggers are things you say or do that send the message to your mind and body that it's go time. Before practice, as the final part of your pre-practice routine, choose three triggers: 1) a breath, either calming or intense, 2) a physical gesture (slap your thigh, pump your fist, clap your hands), or 3) a keyword or phrase ("bring it on!," "settle down). Practice using the same triggers consistently in practice so they become automatic.

During:

Whenever you need to prepare for an effort (e.g., a free throw or penalty kick) or reset after a mistake, immediately use your triggers. Let them interrupt unhelpful thoughts, reconnect you with the present, and direct your attention to what you need to do next.
