I was recently interviewed by WorkingTriathlete.com, one of the leading triathlon coaching programs in the U.S., to discuss my newly developed concept of “mental marginal gain.” Over the course of about one hour, my hosts, Conrad Goeringer and Derek Stone, and I talk about how the mind can be leveraged more effectively to produce meaningful marginal gains in triathlon, other sports, and life.
Marginal gains is one of the most used terms in cycling and triathlon (and gaining traction in the greater sports world). It is generally defined as: “small improvements that can lead to significant gains in performance.” Triathletes tend to think of marginal gains in terms of equipment, whether a fast wetsuit, aero wheels, or carbon-plated running shoes.
At the same time, marginal gains also apply to mental training. I can’t guaranteed that you will go 20% faster if you do mental training (I think I’m pretty good at what I do, but I’m no magician!), but I will say with confidence that using the “mind hacks” I describe in this podcast will enable you to get more out of your training, maximize your race-day preparations, and allow you to give your best effort in your race.
