I was recently interviewed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (the NPR of Down Under) about the impact of the emerging metaverse that is being talked about by leading tech companies. If you’re unfamiliar with what the metaverse is, here’s the definition from Wikipedia: “…typically used to describe the concept of a future iteration of the internet, made up of persistent, shared, 3D virtual spaces linked into a perceived virtual universe.” It involves an immersive online experience that combines virtual reality, augmented reality, and extended reality. The metaverse can be thought of as a fully developed world on the internet.
It was an interesting conversation that provokes both awe and fear. But also worthy of exploration before it is fully developed in order to understand the impact of the metaverse, both positive and negative, on our lives, so we can determine how best to bring it to life in the safest and healthiest way.
