Give Your Children Roots and Wings

By | January 21st, 2015|Categories: Parenting|Tags: , , , , , , |0 Comments

A wonderful article in The New York Times about the importance of allowing your children to explore, risk, and fail. A must-read in today's world of over-involved and fearful parents who try to protect their children from dangers that don't exist and experiences that will actually make them more confident, capable and resilient people.

Sliding Down That Slippery Slope Toward Ski Racing

Taylor family at the 2014 Sugar Bowl Tiki Race Back in 2011, I wrote an article titled “Mama, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Ski Racers, in which I described my internal conflict about whether I wanted my two daughters (then ages 5 and 3, now 9 and 7) to become [...]

Children love the Earth. They really do hug trees. Kids care in the purest and sweetest way for birds, flowers, plants, and animals. To see children smell a flower, marvel at a bee buzzing around them, and jump with joy at seeing a deer are just a few of the ways that children express their [...]

Acts of Compassion Speak Louder than Words to Your Children

By | September 30th, 2014|Categories: Parenting|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

Developing the capacity for compassion and sharing is a huge challenge for young children. Because they are still in an egocentric stage of development, they lack the awareness of and empathy toward others necessary to see how not sharing impacts those around them. Yet, sharing, as an expression of compassion, is a message that your [...]

Steve Jobs was a Low-Tech Parent

By | September 12th, 2014|Categories: Technology|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

I was absolutely shocked when I read this article describing how the late Steve Jobs, despite being the King of 21st century technology, was a low-tech parent, meaning that he didn't allow his children frequent access to the very devices he designed that has changed our world. In fact, as the article also echoed, I [...]

Are Young People Losing Their Ability to Read Emotions?

By | August 26th, 2014|Categories: Technology|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

An interesting new study was just published that suggests that children who have little or no screen time are able to read the emotions of others better than those who spend considerable time in front of a screen. Though the sample for the study was small, its implications are disturbing, namely, that the decline in [...]

Fascinating Article about Being ‘Cool’ at 13 (Hint: Not a Good Thing)

By | July 2nd, 2014|Categories: Parenting|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

A fascinating article about a study that examined so-called cool kids as they entered their teenage years lost their way by the time they reached early adulthood. 'Pseudomature' behavior that resulted in popularity and being labeled 'cool' at age 13 was predictive of all sorts of problems at age 23. My takeaway is that the rush [...]

Is Compassion Children’s Most Admirable Quality?

By | June 30th, 2014|Categories: Parenting|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |2 Comments

Think of all of the qualities that you admire most in others and that you would most like to instill in your children. My guess is that compassion is high on your list. Why is that? Perhaps because, like diamonds, compassion is a rare gem in a society in which selfishness and disregard for others are as common as rhinestones. Consider what compassion is. Most fundamentally, it is “not about me.” Compassion involves being aware of and caring about the needs of others. It means wanting to help others who are less fortunate than you. Compassion has so many other wonderful attributes associated with it, for example, benevolence, good will, unselfishness, and empathy, just to name a few. If these qualities were ingredients to be mixed and baked, you would have the recipe for about as fine a person as you could imagine.

Handwriting is Better Than Keyboarding for Children

By | June 4th, 2014|Categories: Technology|Tags: , , , , , , , |0 Comments

A fascinating article about the impact of handwriting vs. typing on a keyboard. The research seems clear that handwriting has important benefits over keyboarding (yes, it is a verb now!). This despite the fact that increasing numbers of schools have stopped teaching handwriting after second grade and no longer teach cursive writing.
