I’ve recently been absolutely entranced in watching the new documentary series, Edge of the Unknown with Jimmy Chin on Disney+. If you’re not familiar with Jimmy Chin, he is a remarkable fellow: a world-class alpinist (i.e., mountaineer, rock climber, skier), noted outdoors photographer, and Oscar-winning filmmaker for his documentary, Free Solo, about Alex Honnold, one of best rock climbers in then world known for his ascents without ropes.
Edge of the Unknown explores the lives of extreme adventure athletes including, in the first season, mountain climbers, rock climbers, ice climbers, kayakers, skiers, snowboarders, arctic explorers, and surfers. In each episode, Chin spotlights one such athlete and examines the risks they take and how they overcome their fears to do truly death-defying feats.
Absorbing, terrifying, and inspiring are just three of the words that best describe this series. Through in-the-moment footage, interviews with the athletes, and Chin’s own observations, the episodes provide powerful insights and lessons about pushing the limits of human capacity and how the experiences of these extraordinary individuals can be applied to whatever challenges everyone of us face in our everyday lives and in our own visits to the “edge of the unknown.”
You can watch on the series through a subscription to Disney+, but, if you don’t currently subscribe, I can assure you that paying Disney a month’s subscription is well worth the expense.
