Under the category of “I Practice What I Preach,” I raced my first event of the 2023 triathlon season yesterday at the Stanford Treeathlon, a Sprint. It was a very successful and affirming race for me. I won my age group and finished 17/248, and was the oldest by 10 years in the top 20.
More importantly, my bike and run segments showed big improvements over last season (the swim was changed to a short run due to cold water temperatures). My power on the bike was 15 watts higher than in any previous race of this 12-mile distance and I did a negative split in the event (meaning the 2nd half of the bike was faster than the 1st half, indicating good endurance). And my 5K time was my fastest ever in a triathlon (running is the event that declines most with age, so thrilled that I continue to maintain and improve my running speed) and, as with the bike, I ran a negative split. I was especially pleased with my run because I have done little speed work so far this season and I struggled with injuries last season.
I attribute my improvements so far this season to masterful coaching from Dr. Greg Rhodes who has had me focus on heavy weight training (I love it!) and intense intervals on my indoor trainer. For the first time since my return to triathlon in 2019, I am completely healthy this time of year (knock on wood!) and able to maintain a consistent and intense training regimen.
My next warm-up race is in Napa on April 9th and my first “A” series is USAT Multisport Nationals in TX the week of April 18th.
Many thanks to my Partners for supporting me as I compete against (and hopefully beat) the best in the world in my age group in 2023. Without these amazing products, and the great people behind them, I wouldn’t be where I am today!
