Thanks for your great thoughts, Bitbucket. Yes, society does need to lighten up, but I don't see that happening ever, sadly. All we can do as individuals is do what is best for our children and hope we've prepared them to ignore the messages from our culture.

Great article. I know some parents who should read it... (Thanks for linking to your blog on fuzemobility, by the way. I wanted to see your other work.)

"And don?t even get me started on eight-year-old traveling sports teams!"
The first time I heard a radio advertisement for a 3-year-old tutoring service at a chain tutoring center, my reaction was (and still is) WTF? I pretty much vowed then and there that extra curricular activities were capped at 2 at the _most_ (no more than 1 sport, 1 music if the interest is there (especially with public school cutbacks) or 1 other).

"The noted University of Chicago psychologist Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi..."
... that's easy for you to type...

"Csikszentmihalyi suggests that the ideal scenario to accomplish this goal is for the demands of the achievement activity to slightly exceed your children?s capabilities."
Bingo! I knew a guy who dropped out of high school 2 MONTHS before graduation because he was bored out of his mind. And my sophomore year in high school was terrible because I over-reached my abilities. I had to take courses over, at a slightly-lower level, the next year.

Y'know, when you read this, you'd think it should be common sense. I think our society, as a whole, needs to lighten up.
